Farewell to Dennis Hopper

Dennis Hopper in Night Tide (1961)

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing this past weekend of the maverick director, writer and co-star of the 1969 counterculture film classic Easy Rider, Dennis Hopper, whose career as a filmmaker and artist was honoured in a major exhibition here at ACMI, Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood.

For anyone lucky enough to have visited this major exhibition of Hopper, it was a fascinating insight into a complex and talented creative who was well known as an actor and filmmaker, but who was also a prolific artist, photographer and art collector in a career that spanned 6 decades.

In preparing to present the exhibition in Melbourne, many of us at ACMI had the privilege to work directly and closely with Dennis, his staff, and his family. He was warm and generous and displayed genuine affection for Australia, and in particular Melbourne.

He was, of course until his diagnosis late last year, to have travelled to ACMI to officially open the exhibition which was being presented in his honour.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
