The sold-out Masterclass with Burton was the hottest ticket in town last night. ACMI’s Cinema 2 was packed to the rafters, while fans braved the freezing cold in Fed Square to watch a live simulcast of the event on the big screen.
Check out our pics from the night – including an impromptu visit by Tim Burton to the first of our late-night Thursday Burton Club events.

Pretty cool!
I find Tim Burton incredibly sexy!
LOL, nice dreamer ;)
But he does have an amazing imagination <3
I missed out on this ;_;
Will Burton ever come back to Melbourne?
I wish I knew about the book signing. How was that communicated to people? I would have flown in on the Wednesday (we arrived Thurs afternoon) from Sydney to make sure I could attend. I’m gutted that I missed that!
The Masterclass was great, although I was disappointed that Tim Burton’s creative process wasn’t discussed in more depth. It was really a chronological interview with him about his films rather than a “masterclass” discussing/ teaching things such as; his brainstorming process, sources of inspiration, his sketching process and techniques, directing techniques/ tips, cinematography ideas, poetry/ writing tips, insight on collaborating with other artists/ writers/ designers etc. As a designer, illustrator and animator that was what I was expecting. As the Masterclass accompanied the exhibition of Tim Burton’s drawings and artwork you would think that the art and creative process would be the focus. It should have been titled “An Interview With Tim Burton the Filmmaker.” In saying all of this, I feel very fortunate to have attended the Masterclass and found Tim Burton to be a very inspiring, extremely creative and charming man, who surprisingly didn’t have a large ego. Love you Tim X
PS Please hire me! :)
Hi Supachicnic. Great that you enjoyed the Masterclass, even if the direction it took wasn’t what you expected. Tim really was remarkable and we all would have loved to be able to glean even more from him. Sorry that you missed the book signing. To be honest, it was really tricky for us. There was only a limited window of time and a huge public turnout was going to create a lot of disappointment. What we did was to encourage die-hard Burton fans in every way we could to keep in touch with us through our enews, Facebook and Twitter and this is how the news was released. As it was, we had fans starting to queue from 1am! Inspiring, creative and charming – yes, Mr Burton was unquestionably all of those.
Will the video from the Tim Burton Masterclass be available soon? You can find a short excerpt from it here: http://www.abc.net.au/atthemovies/txt/s2931032.htm
Hi Alex. Yes, the Burton Masterclass is in its final edit and we’re expecting it in the next week, or week and a bit. Stay tuned.
