Who is your favourite Deadwood character?

Dave Meagher, ACMI Content Development Production Assistant and Deadwood fan, has something he’d like to share with you.

I am very excited. Why? Because tonight, ACMI is hosting Welcome to Deadwood as part of Live in the Studio.

When I discovered this TV series, I was blown away by its amazingness: the high production values, the complex characters, the interweaving storylines that always keep you guessing, the spectacular script that at times is so dense you need to have subtitles on to know what the hell is going on. Ah yes, and the swearing.

My friends and I were so thoroughly obsessed by the show that we even held a Deadwood-themed birthday party for fellow ACMI colleague Jase (aka Blackie) at an 1800s-era pub in regional Victoria.

I chose to go as Sheriff Montana (Seth Bullock, played by Timothy Olyphant – see photo above) as I thought his character was closest to mine: he is good man, honest, always well groomed, and loyal to his friends and family. But don’t mess with the guy because he’s not afraid to break the law if he thinks it’s the right thing to do. Unfortunately, he also walks like he hasn’t been to the toilet in several weeks. I hope my friends would agree this is where any likeness ends.

Deadwood’s sideshow of colourful characters is both frightening and endearing: Al Swearengen, Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Alma Garret, Trixie, Dan Dority, the list goes on and on (here for example).

It’s a tough decision to make but if you went to a Deadwood party, who would you go as?

E.B. Farnum, the man had a classic turn of phrase. He filled the role of the classic Shakesperean fool who could see what was going on clearer than anyone else and yet was the butt of the jokes.

I have watched it all three times. When I played Fifa 2007 I made a Deadwood Wanderers team populated with players named and designed to look like the characters from the show. They went undefeated for a whole season.

    Wild Bill Hickock!

A noble man with a dark past and a charming smile.

Al Swearengen – walks like a man, talks like a man

I’d go as the doc. He’s got great glasses.

Calamity! I think the most fun part of the character to wear would be that brazen, filthy mouth!

Most admirable is definitely the Doc, and I always like Al’s sidekicks, plus the indomitable Woo
