Peter Hennessey: Artist Insight

My Voyager - Peter Hennessey

Hoisted up high in the Lightwell at ACMI, a large spacecraft made of plywood watches over the people below. Created by Australian artist Peter Hennessey, ‘My Voyager’ is a scale model of the Voyager space probes launched by NASA in 1997 and is one of three scultpures contributed by the artist to our Star Voyager exhibition.

Other Hennessey works in the exhibition include ‘My Lunar Rover’ and ‘My Mission Control’, both full size ‘re-enactments’ of objects from the lunar missions, and a specially-created interactive activity for kids called ‘Spacelab’ (although adults are also welcome to take part in assembling their own spacecraft).

In this video interview, Hennessey discusses his creative practice, his longtime fascination with the space program, his interest in the contrast between real and ‘re-enacted’ objects, and making tangible those objects that remain physically inaccessible to us.

Hennessey’s stunning works are on display on the Galleries level at ACMI, as part of the Star Voyager exhibition, until Sunday 29 January 2012.
